Lester A. Singer

Mr. Lester A. Singer, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, May 11, 2026, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. He was born October 2, 1944 in Rochester, PA. Left to cherish his memory are; 4 grandchildren, Joseph and Leah Singer, Lindsey Singer and Mike Guerrero, Gage Grueshaber, and Ethan Grueshaber; 4 great-grandchildren, Margo and Evie Singer, and Elijah and Kai Lee Guerrero; and daughter-in-law, Wendy Singer. In addition to his parents, Mr. Singer was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Berdessa Lee “Birdie” Winters Singer; daughter, Ginger Singer Grueshaber; and son, Shane Singer.

Lester loved to travel across North America with his loving wife. He is remembered as being funny, a storyteller, loved to throw parties, and loved all things classy (clothes, jewelry, and cars, especially his 1957 Chevy Nomad).

He earned the nickname “Boss” while establishing his career for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 20 located in Toledo, Ohio. There he served many roles: Business Agent, Vice-President, and lastly as President. He also served as the Secretary-Treasurer and State Chairman on the Ohio Conference of Teamsters; and Chairman of the Drug and Alcohol committee for the Central Conference of Teamsters. Among his many accomplishments, Lester considered his election as International Vice-President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to be the crowning achievement of his career, reflecting the respect, trust, and admiration he earned through the labor movement.

He was proud of his community involvement, most notably the annual fundraisers he and his wife held for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Across the years, they were able to raise more than $1 million dollars for St. Jude’s.

A private service will be held at a later date. The family sends their appreciation to the staff at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home, the Creasy Family, the Johnson Family, Bannertown Fire Department, and Surry County EMS.

In lieu of flowers, he family requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
