Lewis Dean Chilton

Lewis Dean Chilton, 73, of Mount Airy, North Carolina, passed away on April 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 27, 1952, in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Dean was the son of the late Dalmer and Kathleen Chilton. Dean dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to Duke Energy, where he was known not only for his strong work ethic but also by the affectionate nickname “Shoestring.” He was the kind of man who showed up, worked hard, and never complained—earning the respect of coworkers and forming friendships that lasted a lifetime. An outdoorsman at heart, Dean found peace in nature. In his younger years, he enjoyed deer hunting, and throughout his life, he was an avid fisherman. In retirement, he spent much of his time in Murrells Inlet, casting lines off the jetty or relaxing on his porch, soaking in the quiet moments he valued so much. At home, he made it a nightly ritual to feed the deer that gathered in his yard—just one of the many small ways he stayed connected to the outdoors he loved. Later in life, Dean’s greatest joy came from his grandchildren—Hannah (Austin), Cameron, Bella, and Brayden—whom he adored deeply. He was proud of each of them and took every opportunity to spoil them and celebrate their lives. Dean is survived by his two sons, Scottie Chilton (Amber) of Mount Airy and Josh Chilton (Nicole) of Huntersville; his sister, Kathy Chilton; his beloved grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his very special sidekick, Bailey. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Debbie Chilton; his sister, Carol Johnson; an infant son, Travis Chilton; and a special uncle, Artie Kirkman. Dean was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. Whether it was wisdom or a well-timed chuckle, his words carried weight. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his steady presence, and the deep love he had for his family. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens with the Rev. David Tucker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bannertown Fire Department c/o Chris Baker 124 Reeves Mill Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
