Mrs. Liza Lucille Whitaker Chandler, age 95, of Mt. Airy passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Twelve Oaks in Mount Airy. She was born in Surry County on November 18, 1922 to the late Robert and Molly Wood Whitaker. Mrs. Chandler was a member of Kingdom Hall but most of all she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who will be dearly missed by all that knew her. Mrs. Chandler had a love of sewing and planting flowers. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Joe Bowman; a son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Judy Freeman; grandchildren, Tracie and Chris Hawks, Haley Bowman, and Brian Waller; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Waller, Chandler Hawks, Madison Waller, Carson Hawks, and Tristan Waller; sister, Gladys Creed; two brothers, Robert Whitaker, and Claude Whitaker; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chandler was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Freeman; her first husband, William Claude Freeman and her second husband, Clyde Hassell Chandler; sisters, Elizabeth Easter, Lillie Whitt, and Ettie Mae Thomas; six brothers, Carlyle, Bill, Woodrow, Curtis, Luther Whitaker and infant brother. A celebration of life for Mrs. Chandler will be held at a later date. The family would like to say “Thank You” to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and Twelve Oaks for all of the love and care shown to Liza during her illness.
