Mr. Lowell Thomas Atkinson, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, December 22, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born May 22, 1935, in Surry County, to the late William Clyde and Ila Roxie Wright Atkinson. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy Phillips Atkinson of the home; four daughters, Magen Atkinson, Marie Atkinson, Lynn Atkinson, and Vicki Atkinson; a son, Lane Atkinson; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Sue McBride; two brothers, Donald Atkinson and Buddy Atkinson; and three brothers-in-law, the Rev. Bill Watson, Larry Battles, Ed Collins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by three sisters, June Watson, Polly Collins, and Betty Battles; and a brother, William Atkinson. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Bill Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Surry Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 981, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
