Mrs. Lucy Myrtle Haymore Key, 96, of Ararat, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015, at her home after several years of declining health. Myrtle was born February 19, 1919, in Surry County, to the late David Carlie and Lula Reeves Haymore. She graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1938. During World War II, she spent a year in Washington, DC, working for the State Department. Her mother missed her youngest daughter, so she returned home and worked as a beautician until her first child was born. She married Paul D. Key of Ararat on February 6, 1949, and they were married 60 years until his passing on February 24, 2009. Myrtle was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended as long as her health permitted, the Claude F. Hooker American Legion Auxiliary, and was a pink lady at Northern Hospital of Surry County as long as she was able to volunteer. Myrtle is survived by her children, Paula Stanley (Randel) of Pilot Mountain, Deborah Stanley of Dobson, Gary Key of Winston-Salem, and Clark Key of the home. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Casey and Cindy Mitchell of Dobson, Amber and Chad Bryant of Elkin, Landon Mitchell and Kenley Mitchell of Dobson, Shane and Christa Stanley of Lowgap, Meredith and Jarod Simmons of Mount Airy, Will and Margot Stanley of Raleigh, and Rebekah Stanley of Chapel Hill. Additionally, she has eight great-grandchildren, Alek Fargis, Colby and Zachary Mitchell, Nate and Alexis Stanley, Stella Bryant, Harvey Stanley, and Calvin Simmons. Her brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Cleo Haymore of Mount Airy, and her sister-in-law, Betty K. Whitaker of Randleman, also survive. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Rick Stanley of Dobson, as well as by three sisters and a brother, Margie Joyce, Gladys Welch, Hazel Love, and Glenn Haymore. The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers that helped them keep their mom at home for the last six years, Tammy Hill, Patsy Quesinberry, Sharon Wood, Shelia Riddle, and Teresa Willard. We are especially grateful to Tammy for her love and care of both our parents for the past eight years. We also are thankful to Mountain Valley Hospice for their care during her last days. The funeral service will be held Monday, October 26, 2015, at 3:00 PM at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, Old Hwy 52, Pilot Mountain. The family will greet friends Monday from 1:00 until 3:00 PM at the church, with burial to follow the service at Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dobson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to LifeSpan, Inc., 623 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
