Ms. Margaret Lynn Salmons, 72, of Elkin, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, August 24, 2025, at her home.
Ms. Salmons was born May 21, 1953, in Surry County, the youngest of three daughters born to the late Hugh Glenn and Catherine Whitener Salmons. A longtime resident of Elkin, she graduated from Elkin High School in 1971 and went on to attend the Forsyth Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her credentials as a registered nurse in 1974.
Margaret felt a calling to care for others from an early age, and she lived that calling fully through a long and meaningful nursing career. She served patients with compassion and professionalism across numerous hospitals and clinics, including work in both a burn unit and a prison – roles she was particularly proud of. Her final position was at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where she left a lasting impact on colleagues and patients alike with her steady presence, skillful hands, and warm heart.
Margaret was known for her bright smile that could light up any room, and her quick wit that kept those around her on their toes. A true Gemini, she was equal parts strong-willed and deeply compassionate, with a spirit that was as dynamic as it was loving. Though admittedly a bit stubborn at times, her determination only further reflected her deep care and conviction in all she did.
Her love for animals knew no bounds – even spiders and snakes were not excluded from her kindness. She was known to rescue dogs, frogs, and countless other creatures throughout her life. Whether it was a stray needing shelter or a critter needing saving, Margaret had a heart big enough for them all.
Outside of her profession, Margaret found joy in the simple beauty of life. She loved flowers – growing them, arranging them, and admiring them in bloom. Gardening brought her peace, and the beach was her sanctuary. She treasured walking along the shore, collecting seashells, and soaking in the calm of the ocean. She also cherished any opportunity to spend time outdoors and connect with nature.
Margaret was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin, where her faith was a guiding light in her life.
She is survived by two daughters, Carrie Mann and her husband, Sammy Allen, and Mary Catherine Mann; a son, Derek Lee Mann; two grandsons, Colin Lee Mann and Gavin Elijah Walters; a sister, Cathy Salmons Fergen; a niece, Amy Summey and her husband, Brian; three nephews, Kenneth Falls, Jr. and his wife, Paige, Matthew Fergen, and David Fergen; two great-nieces, Catherine Summey and Kinslee Falls; a great-nephew, Evan Falls; and two great-great-nephews, Wyatt Rizzo and Weston Rizzo.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Salmons was preceded in death by a sister and special brother-in-law, Carol Salmons Falls and Kenneth Falls, Sr.
A service of worship and celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Elkin, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. and Dr. Bill Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 110 Gwyn Avenue, Elkin, NC 28621.
