Obituary

Margie Irene Utt, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, peacefully departed this life on October 31, 2026, at the Woltz Hospice House in Dobson, North Carolina. Born on October 19, 1938, in Fancy Gap, Virginia, Irene was the cherished daughter of Harvey Jeff and Mary Lee Melton. Her life was a testament to kindness, faith, and family devotion, leaving an enduring legacy of love.

Irene shared a remarkable 64-year marriage with her devoted husband, Carl Ray Utt. Together, they built a loving family and created countless cherished memories. Their life together was a beautiful journey filled with camping adventures and fishing trips to the mountains and the beach. They found joy in the simple pleasures and the great outdoors, nurturing a family that would grow to include five children, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-six great-grandchildren.

Irene's career was spent alongside her husband at Proctor Silex, where they worked until retirement. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family. Irene's home was a warm and welcoming haven; known for the big dinners she lovingly prepared for her children and grandchildren. Her sweet nature and kind heart touched all who knew her.

A woman of profound faith, Irene's love for the Lord was the cornerstone of her life. She steadfastly placed God first, her family second, and her country third, praying daily for their well-being. Her unwavering faith and generous spirit were sources of inspiration to her family and friends.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Carl, her son-in-law Randy Thomas, and her siblings, James, Burley, Edgar, and Kenny Melton, as well as Edith Horton, Arlene Horton, Juanita Bolt, Ruth Easter, and Ida Jean Huff

She is lovingly survived by her son, Michael (Sheila) Utt of Mount Airy, NC; her daughters, Kathie (Robert) Fleenor of Covington, KY, Penny Thomas of Mount Airy, NC, Brenda VanHoy (Doug) of Elkin, NC, and Pamela (Stan) Simmons of Mount Airy, NC. Her legacy continues through her thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and her sister Wanda Sawyers of Fancy Gap, VA. Irene also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends for a visitation on November 8, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home and Chapel in Mount Airy, NC with Reverend Gary Horton and Reverend Mark Utt officiating. A service celebrating Irene's beautiful life will follow at 2:00 PM.

In honor of Irene's compassionate nature, donations can be made to the Woltz Hospice Home, P.O. Box 325, Dobson, North Carolina 27017, reflecting her family's gratitude for the care and comfort they provided in her final days.
