Mrs. Marjorie Murdock Rees, of Mount Airy, passed away early Sunday morning, January 19, 2014. Mrs. Rees was born May 2, 1920, in Troutman, the daughter of the late Brown and Bernice Arthurs Murdock. Mrs. Rees attended Mitchell College in Statesville. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family, and was the source of ceaseless support to her husband in his many professional and community activities. She was an avid gardener, with an artist's eye for color. She enjoyed painting, and participated enthusiastically in dance classes well into her seventies. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy for six decades and a past member of the church choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Floyd Eugene "Flip" Rees, Sr. of Mount Airy; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Rees King and Michael Lowndes King of Mount Airy; and two brothers, Oswald Murdock of Troutman and Vaughn Murdock of South Yarmouth, MA. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, John (holly lu) Rees and Gene (Peggy) Rees, all of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Marjorie (Chance) Reynolds, Dr. Mary Lynn King (Jeff Weigele), and Samuel Rees; and three great-grandchildren, Chancellor, Rees, and Kate Reynolds; and a sister-in-law, Mildred S. Murdock of Troutman. The family is deeply grateful to Marjorie's devoted caregivers who provided her with loving, tender care during her final years. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 326 South Main Street, Mount Airy, with Dr. Rob Evans and Mr. David Beal officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The Rees family will receive friends Tuesday from noon until 2:00 PM in the Ladies' Parlor at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Surry Community College Foundation, 630 South Main Street, Dobson, NC 27017; or First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1286, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Rees family.
