Martha "Mott" Rider Martin

Mrs. Martha “Mott” Rider Martin, age 83, of Stuart, Virginia passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick County. She was born in Smyth County on December 17, 1931 and was the only daughter of the late Charles Rider and Lollie W. Rider of Marion, VA. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Martin.

She received her Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree from Radford University and worked for the Patrick County School System for 34 years as an elementary, high school teacher, and guidance counselor over the course of her career and retired in 1988.
“Mott” was an avid golfer and had served on the board at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd for several years. She was also a member of BRATS and had performed in several of their productions. She was a member of the Red Hatters, DAR (in which she had held several offices in the local chapter), Retired Teachers Association, and was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society. Additionally, she was a member of Stuart Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by one son, Edd Martin of Stuart, who was her loving and devoted caretaker in her later years in life; two loving daughters, Pat Martin Lyon and husband, Maurice Lyon of Stuart, and Brenda Martin of Stuart; two granddaughters, Ashley Lyon of Stuart, and Allison Lyon of Stuart and her loving and devoted cat, Annie.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 4:30pm at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Bucky Hunsicker and Pastor Danny Redman officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday and other times at the home of her daughter, Pat Lyon located at 454 Ashby Drive, Stuart, VA 24171.
