Mrs. Mary Ruth Eaton Cooke, 83, of 128 Eaton Street, Mount Airy, passed away Friday morning, June 8, 2012, at her home. Mrs. Cooke was born October 18, 1928, in Surry County, one of seven children born to the late Joseph Edgar and Dora Ella Atkins Eaton. Ruth was a homemaker and attended Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. Ruth led a life of service to her family. She cared for her mother for several years before her passing and then continued caring for her sister, Peggy. Her life was a testament to her love of family. She also enjoyed working in her yard, having beautiful flowers, and she loved taking care of all her pets. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria Ellen "Cookie" and Zeb Crews and Theresa Elizabeth and Larry Davis, all of Mount Airy, and Paula Denise and Vernon Norman of Dobson; a grandson and his wife, Mitchell and Teresa Southern; two great-grandsons, Tyler Southern and Jamie Southern; and a special sister, Peggy Eaton of the home. Also surviving are a stepgranddaughter and her husband, Jessica and B.J. Wright; two stepgrandsons and their wives, Sam and Chas Crews and Bill and Kim Crews; and eight great-stepgrandchildren, Ada Grace Wright, Eli Wright, Madelyn Crews, Samuel Crews, Noah Crews, Jack Crews, Virginia Crews, and Dixie Crews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cooke was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Graham Cooke; and five brothers, Orbie Eaton, Ed Eaton, Elbert Eaton, Vance Eaton, and Hobert Eaton. The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 10, 2012, at 3:30 PM at Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Dr. David Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in the Westfield Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 until 3:30 PM at Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. Special thanks to Gentevia Home Health, Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, and AeroCare Medical for the loving and compassionate care they provided. The family would also like to express appreciation to Sharon Greenwood, a close friend, for all she's done and the love she's shown to all of us. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the account of Mary Ruth Cooke, c/o BB&T, 541 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030 for the continued care of Ruth's sister, Peggy Eaton. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
