Mrs. Mary Evelyn Badgett Gardner, 95, of Dobson, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 14, 2015, at Dunmore Plantation. Mrs. Gardner was born September 18, 1919, in Surry County, the daughter of the late E. Grover and Ida Savannah Jane Canter Badgett. Evelyn retired as a hairdresser after 60 years of service. She was a faithful member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church until her health declined. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Judith G. Childress and Alton Grey and Martha G. Hall and her fiancé, Steve Norman, all of Mount Airy; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jack Rodney Gardner of Mount Airy, Wayne W. and Margaret Franklin of Dillsburg, PA, and John R. and Roxanne Gardner of Stanford, CT; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian Badgett Kirkman of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Boston Gardner; and a brother, Jack Badgett. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 16, 2015, at 4:00 P.M. at Oakdale Cemetery, with the Rev. Dennis W. “Bud” Cameron officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Franklin Heights United Methodist Church, 416 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
