Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Inscore Starling Gwyn passed away Sunday morning, February 2, 2014. She was born April 14, 1921, in Surry County, the daughter of the late James Monroe and Martha Byrd Inscore. Mary was a loving, supportive mother to her children; a joy to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a friend to all who knew her. Her children "rise up and call her blessed." Mary was retired after many years as a self-employed beautician. Mrs. Gwyn was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Shirley Starling of Cherryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Leon Hiatt of Mount Airy and Linda and Wayne Allred of Rural Hall; five grandchildren, Deanne (Randy) Moss, Dean (Margaret) Starling, Fred (Mark) Hiatt, Tracie (Chad) Ross, and Amanda (Bob) Yakos; and eight great-grandchildren, Ethan Crocker, Eric Starling, Kaitlin Starling, Hannah Ross, Trey Ross, Sam Yakos, Nate Yakos, and Joe Yakos. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Roy (Mozelle) Inscore of Wilson; and a sister, Dot O'Briant of Laurinburg. She is survived, additionally, by a stepson, Ralph (Bea) Gwyn of Mount Airy; a stepgranddaughter, Crystal (Randy) McCraw; and a stepgreat-grandson, Blake (Sarah) McCraw. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Jones Starling; her second husband, Shafer Gwyn; six brothers, Howard Inscore, John Inscore, Marcus Inscore, Lytle Inscore, Columbus Inscore, and Clyde Inscore; two sisters, Hattie Inscore Colbert and Thelma Inscore Hall; and a stepson, Garfield Gwyn. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, immediately following the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00 at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, and other times at the home of Kay and Leon Hiatt, 316 Lynda Street, Mount Airy. The family would like to thank Dr. Roger Kerley and the staff of the skilled nursing unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County for the loving care provided to their mother and grandmother.
