Mary Jane Lankford Horning

Mrs. Mary Jane Lankford Horning, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, April 20, 2026, at Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Mrs. Horning was born October 6, 1944, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Fred and Mary Johnson Lankford. Mary devoted many years of service as a pharmacy technician and later as a data manager at Flat Rock Elementary School. A faithful member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Mary served as the church organist for many years. She found great joy in quilting and crocheting, and she especially loved tending to her flower gardens. She is survived by her husband, Jacque Alan Horning; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and David Sparks and Karen and Danny Hoosier; her grandchildren, Isreal and Crystal Williams, Taylor and Chris Schaeffer, Abby Sparks, Jacob Hawks, and Nicholas and Brittany Hoosier; her great-grandchildren, Kylee Williams, Connor Lockley, and Abigail Hoosier; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Archie “Buck” and Carolyn Lankford and Johnny Lankford. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Horning was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Gardner; and a brother, Gary Lankford. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Holy Angels Catholic Church, with Father Peter Nouck officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Campaign Fund at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 1208 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
