Mary Lou Sykes Johnson

Mrs. Mary Lou Sykes Johnson, age 92 of Mount Airy passed away at her home Saturday morning May 31, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 2, 1933, in Surry County to the late Charles Aaron Sykes, Sr. and Mary Elsie Mosley Sykes. Mrs. Johnson was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church. Mary Lou always had a 100 watt smile on her face, but she did have a 165 mph smile on her face for 3 laps in a suit on Charlotte Motor Speedway. She is survived by her children and spouses, Gary and Ann Johnson, Karen Johnson Stewart, and Junior and Tammy Johnson; 6 grandchildren and spouses, Kristi and Jeff Johnson, Kelli and David Billings, Lindsey and Luke VanHorn, Brittany and Tyler Clontz, Ryan Sullivan, and Brooke and Ron Ayers; 15 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 2 grand dogs, Midnight and Smokie Joe; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Tina and Harold Mooney, and Pam Sykes; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Rayburn and Geraldine Sykes, and David Sykes; and many other family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Wade Guy Johnson; grandson, Bo Hutchens; and by two brothers, Charles Aaron Sykes, Jr. and Ira William “Bill” Sykes. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday June 3, 2025, at 2:00pm at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Quesinberry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night, June 2, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Community Baptist Church. The Johnson family would like to give a heartfelt “Thank You” to Tim Wilson, Tina Mooney, Patty Lane Carpenter, Tammy Johnson, Ann Johnson, Brooke Ayers, and Lana Boyd for all of the love, compassion, and care given to Mrs. Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Community Baptist Church, c/o Pam Y. Sewell, 198 Delaware Avenue, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
