Mary "Jo" Joanne Sage Monday

Mary "Jo" Joanne Sage Monday, 72, passed away peacefully, on Monday, July 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Welch, West Virginia, in 1953, Jo was the daughter of the late James Booker Sage and Shirley Sue Cottle Sage. She spent her childhood traveling the world with her military father before making homes throughout Grayson and Carroll County, including Rugby in Mouth of Wilson, Independence, and River Rd in Dugspur, Virginia—communities she loved and where she built lifelong friendships. Jo graduated from Independence High School in 1971. Throughout her life she was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to serving others. She worked for Mr. Casuals, Grayson Garments, Robertshaw Controls, CompAir Kellogg, D&J Hair Affair, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, and Tri-Area Community Health Clinic. She was also a proud member of the Rugby Volunteer Rescue Squad in her early years. In 1996, Jo married the love of her life, Ophir "Jr" Monday. Together they built a life rooted in family, faith, and the simple joys of home. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard "Rick" Sage. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Jr. Monday; her children, Katrina Spencer Fields, Brian Spencer and spouse Johanna, James Spencer, Cody Monday and partner Destiny, and Matthew Monday; her beloved grandchildren, Andrew Fields, Taylor Early and spouse John, Isaiah Lang, Liliana Spencer, Alexander Spencer, Anabella Spencer, and Everett Monday; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Kawliga and Nakoma Early. She is also survived by her sisters, Sharon Walls, Donna Sage, and Nancy Richardson and spouse Terry, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and extended family members who will forever cherish the memories they shared with her. Jo's greatest accomplishment was her family. She found joy in watching her children and grandchildren grow, camping with her husband, celebrating life's milestones, and making everyone who walked through her door feel like they belonged. She had a way of making others smile, and one of her favorite sayings was, "I'm tickled to death to be here," a phrase that perfectly reflected her appreciation for life's simple moments and the people she loved. Her kindness, laughter, and love will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. A service celebrating Jo’s life will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 4:00 PM with Pastor Michael Shockley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00 until 4:00 PM prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice of the New River Valley in appreciation for the compassionate care and support they provided to Jo and her family during her final days. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Monday.
