Mrs. Mary Virginia "Jeannie" Rakes Morton, 63, of 620 Morton Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at her home. Mrs. Morton was born March 21, 1948, in Surry County, to Virginia Marshall Rakes and the late Wayne Rakes. She was last employed at Surry County Schools and Morton's Place, and she was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Willie Eugene "Billy" Morton of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and John Williams and April Morton and Wesley Nichols, all of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Bonnie Morton of Mount Airy; six grandchildren, Tracy Nunn, John Williams, II, Ashley Morton, Courtney Morton, James Morton, II, Ben Goble, and Emily Goble; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Nunn and Nathan Morton; her mother, Virginia Marshall Rakes of Mount Airy; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Darlene Love, Waynette Rakes, and Donna and Buck Berrier, all of Mount Airy; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jimmy and Margaret Rakes of Pilot Mountain and Chris Rakes of Mount Airy. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 13, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with the Rev. Dale Wallace officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express "special thanks" to Katherine Hawks and DeeAnn Ward at Northern Hospital of Surry County and Carolyn Spraker and Tabitha Kelly at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
