Mrs. Mary "Edith" Watson Vernon, 74, of Mt. Airy went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 16, 2015 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Surry County on July 9, 1940 to the late Dixie Allen and Mary Jarvis Watson. Mrs. Vernon was a homemaker and a member of Blues Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school many years. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Charlie Vernon of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Todd Stanley of Mt. Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Monty and Karen Vernon, Myron and Cindy Vernon all of Mt. Airy; grandchildren and spouse, Jennifer and Jonathan Simmons, Hunter Vernon, Grayson Vernon, Katie Stanley, Carson Stanley; a great grandchild, Jake Simmons; a sister, Peggy Atkins of Mt. Airy; a brother and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Nancy Watson, Loretta Watson all of Mt. Airy a brother-in-law, Ed Alexander of Clemmons; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death by; two sisters, Betty Jo Alexander and Faye Thore; three brothers, Guy Watson, Dixie Allen Watson, Jr., and Ray Watson; a sister-in-law, Ruby Watson; two brothers-in-law, Carl Atkins, and Pete Thore. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Blues Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Travis Sechrist, the Rev. Roland McCraw, the Rev. Terry Watson and the Rev. Bill Spurlin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 PM until time for the service at the church.
