Mrs. Melverine Gilley Cooke, age 87 of Boone, and formerly of Pilot Mountain, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 07, 2014 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. Mrs. Cooke was born in Surry County on June 19, 1926 to John William and Rosella Brinkley Gilley. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister who will be dearly missed by her devoted family and friends. Mrs. Cooke was retired from Baldwin's Department Store and was a member of Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter Darlene Parker and her husband Clinton of Valle Crucis, a son Clayton Cooke and his wife Nancy of Boone; a son-in-law Larry Cooke of Pilot Mountain, grandchildren, Cheryl Catoe and husband Rick, Art Adams, Barrett Cooke and wife Cassandra, Jennifer Cooke, Boone Cooke and wife Julie; great grandchildren, Catherine, Evan, and Ryan Catoe, Emerson and Bennett Cooke, Carter and Marie Cooke; a sister, Glenda Gravitte of Pilot Mountain and brothers and a sister-in-law, Wade Gilley and C. R. and Glenda Gilley all of Pilot Mountain. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cooke was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur F. Cooke; a daughter, Marilyn Cooke and brothers, Earlie Gilley, Cecil Gilley, Ray Gilley and Rex Gilley. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church with services conducted by Rev. Doug Brinkley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 P.M until time for the service. Moody Funeral service in Mt. Airy will be assisting the Cooke Family.
