Michael Leon Smart

Michael Leon Smart of Winston Salem, North Carolina, passed peacefully from this life on the morning of July 31, 2019, after a long and tough battle with cancer. Mike was surrounded and supported by his loving family during the final days of his life. He was born in Martinsville, VA on July 10, 1962, to the late Leon Smart and Shirley Turner Smart Coalson Moore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Spangler, and a brother, Bobby Foster.

Michael is survived by his wife, Maria Manring Smart of Swansboro, NC; a daughter, Tasha Smart Thomas of Roanoke, VA; a son, Dustin Leon Smart of Rocky Mount; two step-sons, Garrett Collins of Reidsville, NC, William Hudson of Swansboro, NC; two sisters, Pamela Smart of Ararat, VA and Kimberly Smart of Roanoke, VA; two grandsons, Cooper Michael Thomas of Roanoke and Hunter Leon Smart of Rocky Mount, VA; two Step Brothers, Rodney Boyd of Bassett VA and Gerald Boyd of Woolwine VA; several nieces, nephews and an immeasurable amount of family and friends who loved Mike more than can be described. 

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019, at 1:00 pm in the Turner Family Cemetery in Elamsville, VA, officiated by Family Friend and Pastor, Christopher Williams. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested all donations be made to the Turner Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Renee Fulcher 786 Fairystone Park Rd. Ferrum, VA 24088. A celebration of Mike’s life will commence following his graveside burial at Stevie Spangler’s residence.
