Mona Faye Horton, 86, of Mount Airy, passed peacefully on November 24, 2025, to be in the loving arms of her Savior. Born on February 17, 1939, she was the daughter of Warren “Mack” Griffin and Margie Corn Griffin, and the sister of the late Joe Sam Griffin.
On August 13, 1955, Mona married the love of her life, Roy Kenneth “Ken” Horton. For nearly seven decades, they built a home grounded in faith, hard work, and devotion to God and family. Together, they raised five children: Karen Bowers (Rex), Roy Horton, Dee Wilson (Leon), Thomas Horton (Kristi), and Edward Horton (Angela).
Known as “Nanny” to her twelve grandchildren—Jason, Ashley, Brandi, Christian, Hannah, Devan, David, Kristin, Kayla, Alyssa, Kenley, and Jared—and ten great-grandchildren, Haley, Carley, Emily, Natalie, Chance, Macey, Ryker, Katie, Mayvlee, and Riplee. She is also fondly remembered by her nephew, Casey. She had a remarkable gift for forming deep and meaningful connections, making each family member feel uniquely loved.
As the family matriarch, Mona found great joy in bringing her family together. Holidays, celebrations, and Sunday meals after church were among the family’s happiest moments. She tended a garden, baked, and canned food with practiced skill, and approached every task with thriftiness and resourcefulness, always making the most of what she had and caring for those around her. Her life reflected simplicity, generosity, and a steady warmth that made all feel welcome and at ease.
Mona’s faith guided every part of her life. A devoted member of Mount Airy Wesleyan Church, Sunday school teacher, and a faithful supporter of the Gideons Auxiliary, she expressed her beliefs through quiet service and kindness. She was a natural caregiver, providing in-home childcare for many years. Whether with family, friends, or children in her care, she fostered a gentle, safe environment where everyone felt loved and protected.
A service celebrating Mona’s life will be held at Moody’s Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC, on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Reverend Jason Madison and Richard Loman presiding. A burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 28, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
The family sincerely thanks Novant Health and Mountain Valley Hospice for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, PO Box 1032, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
Mona’s life was a blessing, and her memory will continue to inspire those she loved for generations. Her family finds comfort knowing she now rests in her eternal home, greeted with the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25:23).
