Mr. Arthur Clevis "A.C." Carter, age 79 of Stuart, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on July 22, 1934 to the late Arthur and Vergie Hazelwood Carter. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brittany Goad, and a sister, Margie Cooper. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Carter formed his own trucking and hauling business as a young man. He hauled material on numerous Virginia road construction projects, such as Interstate 81. Later in life he was well known in the area for spreading lime and fertilizer. Mr. Carter's son, Roger, joined him in this business for many years. Mr. Carter was also a lifelong farmer, raising cattle and growing fruit. He enjoyed playing and listening to bluegrass music. He also loved pitching horseshoes, either with family and friends in the front yard, or in area competitions such as the County Fair. One of the most important things in Mr. Carter's life was the priority he placed on attending sporting events that his children and grandchildren were participating in.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Williams Carter of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Karl Weiss of Stuart, Sandra and Brett Hill of Charlotte, North Carolina, Glenda and Mike Vaughn of Clemmons, North Carolina and Annette and Ronnie Turner of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Paula Carter of Meadows of Dan; fifteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Ronnie Green and Pastor Terry Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.
