Mr. Bill Joe Nowlin, 82, of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at Wilkes Regional Hospital. Mr Nowlin was born in Surry County on June 1, 1932 to Warren Higgins and Rachel Lou Freeman Nowlin. He served our country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Pittsburg and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He had a great love for animals and operated a local pet store for many years. Mr. Nowlin will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends. Surviving is his wife, Evelyn Caudle Nowlin; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sandi Nowlin; step children, Mark Barbour, David Barbour and wife Regina and Suzanne Simmons; grandchildren, Jarrod Clay Nowlin and wife Andrea and Matthew Ryan Nowlin and wife Kim; step grandchildren, Seth Tyler Simmons, Samuel Evan Simmons, Ryan Simmons, Reece Barbour, Bailey Barbour, Davi Suzanne Barbour, Tyrus Harley Barbour and Alek Caudle Barbour; great grandchildren, Brooklyn Paige Nowlin, Brody Ryan Nowlin and one on the way; step great grandchildren, Madison Kirkman and Branson Kirkman; a brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Barbara Nowlin; a brother-in-law, Howard Hull and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nowlin was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Jean Hull and Helen Bonds and brothers, Harvey Shelton Nowlin and Junior Nowlin. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 29, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church by Rev. Alex Martin. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends at the church Friday one hour prior to the service.
