Mr. Billy Gray Smith

Mr. Billy Gray Smith, age 71 of Claudville, VA, a beloved husband, father and papa, , peacefully passed away Friday, May 11, 2012, at the home of his daughter after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. A simple, honest man, he will be greatly missed by his family and the many people he came in contact with over the years. He never met a stranger and was always the first to offer a helping hand. Mr. Smith was retired from Floyd S. Pike Electrical Contractors after nearly 40 years of service. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Beulah (Combs) Smith, and an infant daughter, Tracye Lane. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patsy Hooker Smith. The couple married on January 18, 1963. Also surviving are a son, Anthony Gray, and daughter-in-law, Alisa Hall Smith, a daughter, Tonya Williams and her husband, Ken, two precious grandsons, Elliot Gray and Trevor William Smith, four sisters, Shirley Anderson, Shelby (Homer) Hooker, Betty Mae (Robert) Christian, and Linda East and one brother, Ronnie. He also leaves behind his special little canine buddy, Baxter. The family cannot adequately express its appreciation to the many friends who have provided help, support and prayers during this time. Enough good things can never be said about the services of Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem who provided compassionate care in such a difficult time of need. The family will receive visitors at Moody Funeral Services in Mt. Airy on Sunday night from 6:00 to 8:00. A memorial service will be held in Moody's Chapel on Monday, May 14th at 2:00 PM by Rev. Harry Sherrill and the family will receive friends at Hatcher's Chapel United Methodist Church afterwards. Mr. Smith will be laid to rest privately at a later time at Charter's Chapel in Ararat, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hatcher's Chapel United Methodist Church at 243 Hatcher's Chapel Rd., Claudville, VA 24076 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
