Mr. Clarence Odell Overby

Mr. Clarence Odell Overby, age 70 of Stuart, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Stokes County on August 29, 1945 to the late George Dewey and Betsy Martin Overby. In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Mae Overby and a brother, Russell Flinchum Overby. He had retired from United Elastic/J.P. Stevens and Narroflex Corp. in Stuart with 52 years of service. He had been an active member of Minnies Chapel Wesleyan Church for 48 years where held many offices including Local Church Board Member, Vice-Chairman of the Church Board, Church Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Building Committee member, Church Choir member and Lawncare and Maintenance man for the church and parsonage. He also did lawn service for others in the community. He was presently attending Middle Cross Missionary Baptist Church where he helped build the church, was a member of the choir and a parking attendant. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 51 years and 8 months, Phyllis Clark Overby of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Tabitha Overby of Patrick Springs; a granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Overby of the home; two step-grandchildren, Tyler Spencer and Heather Spencer of Patrick Springs; one sister, Mozelle Owens of Westfield, North Carolina; two brothers, John Lester Overby and wife, Lois of Lawsonville, North Carolina, James Vester Overby of Lawsonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Middle Cross Missonary Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Morrison, Rev. Gary Combs and Rev. Thomas Bocock officiating. Burial will follow in Minnies Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Middle Cross Missionary Baptist Church, and at other times at the home.
