Mr. David “Dave” Wayne Irby 74, of Mt. Airy passed away Wednesday evening at Forsyth Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. Dave was born in Danville, VA on August 10, 1941 to the late Ernest Francis Irby and Bessie Lee Tate Irby. Dave proudly served our country in the Army Special Forces as a Green Beret for thirteen and a half years, which included two tours in Vietnam and a tour in Korea. He was a member of the Antarctic Explorers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He was most proud of his work with the Disabled American Veterans. He served as State Commander for DAV for one year and several years as Chapter Commander. Dave is survived by his wife, Carolyn Marion Irby of the home; three daughters, Patrice Irby Livesay, Michelle Irby, and Julie Irby; one son, David Wayne Irby II; five grandchildren, Hailey Ward, Audrey Ward, Sophia Smith, Cameron Livesay, and Jacob Irby; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth Irby, Sr. and Nellie; one sister-in-law, Seaglenda Irby; one brother-in-law, Jerry Wiley. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Noel Irby; one brother Earl Irby; a sister, Rita Irby Wiley; and one infant brother. There will be no formal services for Mr. Irby. Moody Funeral Services in Mt. Airy is serving the Irby family. In lieu of flowers, Dave’s wish was for memorials be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, 767 West Lebanon St, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
