Mr. Edward Thomas "Poppy" Byrnes

Mr. Edward Thomas "Poppy" Byrnes of Mt. Airy passed away at his home Friday, January 31, 2014. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 25, 1932 to the late Edward and Catherine McGuire Byrnes. Mr. Byrnes served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by six loving children and spouses, Kathy and Tracey Bentley of Mt. Airy, Sally Ann and Mark Swiatek of New Hall, CA, Constance and Pat Smith of Landrum, SC; Steven and Tama Byrnes of Simpsonville, SC, Brian Byrnes and Bernie Schlager of Santa Fe, NM, Ed and Crystal Byrnes of Bend, OR; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Byrnes was preceded in death by his wife, Constance Vitale Byrnes. The family has planned a private memorial service in Hackettstown, NJ at a later date. They have requested memorials to be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
