Mr. Frank Baden Netherland, Jr., age 80, of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at his home. He was born in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1936 to the late Dr. Frank Baden Netherland, Sr. and Frances Jane Campbell Netherland, formerly of Stuart. He was a direct descendant to seventeenth-century American families, the Netherland family of Virginia and the Campbell family of New Hampshire and, since 1839, of Stuart.
He was a graduate of Martinsville High School, Averett College, and he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the owner of Campbell Farms and Stuart Sound Service in Stuart for many years. He had been an engineer for the particle board division of Stuart Lumber Corporation from 1968 to 1979. He was Chief of the Stuart Volunteer Fire Department from 1975 through 1986. He was a member of the Board of Directors of R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital from 1974 through 1986, where he had served on the Executive Committee. He had also served on several Patrick County governmental committees, including the Electoral Board, the Reassessment Commission, and various study commissions. He was president of the Stuart Cemetery Association, Inc.
Mr. Netherland was known as a performer and entertainer on the organ and clarinet. He had been a recitalist for the lovers of the music of the movie theatre organ and he had played in many large theatres and on radio in the eastern and southern U.S. from the 1950’s. Much of his education was in the fields of theatrical and television design and production, for which he was also well known in the local area. He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan Boyd Netherland of the home; and his daughter, Susannah Marie Netherland of Stuart.
A committal service will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Stuart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stuart Cemetery Association, P.O.
