Mr. Haywood Gates, 89, of Mt. Airy passed away Friday, May 1, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born in Surry County on August 23, 1925 to the late Isaac and Mary Flemings Gates. Mr. Gates was retired from the North Carolina Granite Quarry after 47 years of service and was a long time member of Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Frances Elizabeth Lynch Gates; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Billy Bowen; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Linda Gates; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a brother, Bobby Gates; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gates was preceded in death by a daughter, Treva Marie Beck; three brother, Elbert, Lester, and Jack Gates. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church with Dr. David Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral home in Mt. Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, 120 Pentecostal Holiness Church Rd., Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
