Mr. James Alvin Handy, age 85 of Woolwine, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Roanoke on January 26, 1929 to the late Walter Harmon and Dolly Maude Brammer Handy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Handy was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Ella Hubbard Handy, and a brother, John T. Handy. He had retired from United Elastic as a supervisor, and was a longtime member of Smith River Church of the Brethren where he had served as a deacon.
Mr. Handy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Erman Bryant of Stuart; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Regena Handy of Woolwine; two grandsons, James T. "Todd" Handy, Jr., Joshua T. Handy and wife, Stephannie; a step-grandson, Jason E. Bryant and wife, Monica; one great-grandson, Riley James Handy; seven step great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Dillon, Jessica, David, Paul, Abigail and Jake Bryant; a sister, Loraine Handy Gillespie of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Handy will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Smith River Church of the Brethren with Pastor Danny Gilley and Pastor Dewayne Troutt officiating. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church, and at other times at the home. If desired, memorials may be made to the Smith River Church of the Brethren, 1386 Bob White Road, Stuart, Virginia 24171 or to the Smith River Rescue Squad, 9962 Woolwine Hwy., Woolwine, Virginia 24185.
