James Dale Harris, 68 died Saturday October 20, 2012 at his home in Woolwine, Virginia. He was born in Floyd County, Virginia on January 12, 1944, the third child of the late Oscar Allen Harris and the late Linda Bell Harris. James attended Willis elementary School and Woolwine Elementary School. He graduated from Woolwine High School in 1962, where he was a excellent student and a member of the basketball and baseball teams. James served in the U.S. Marines from 1962-1966. He trained at Parris Island, South Carolina and Camp Lejeune North Carolina. His service included maneuvers in Cuba and the Mediterranean. He also served in the Vietnam War and saw some extremely tough duty as part of the Marine's elite Long Range Reconnaissance Teams near DaNang, South Vietnam and the demilitarized zone. James received an AD degree in Accounting from Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke following his discharge from military service. James's career included 15 years with Appalachian Power Company in both Roanoke, Virginia and Charleston, West Virginia. He later worked for Cedar Coal Company and Peabody Coal Company. James spent the last 12 years of his career working in real estate sales. In 2002, James moved back to Woolwine, Virginia to help the family with parents health issues. He immediately joined the Smith River Rescue Squad and earned his emergency medical technician certification. James went on to serve as President of the Board and as 2nt Lieutenant for the Squad. He also served as President of the Patrick County Fire and Rescue Association, a position he held until health issues forced him to resign in August. Most recently, he worked with Blue Ridge Real Estate of Stuart, Virginia. His hobbies include gardening and lawn work. James has always loved his dogs. James is a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and attended Jacks Creek Church near Woolwine, Virginia.
Surviving are a sister and brother in law, Linda and Bert Hatcher of Manassas; three brothers and sisters in law, Miles and Shelby Harris of Patrick Springs, Leon and Beverly Harris of Roanoke, Mavin and Crystal Harris of Woolwine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder David Kamoda officiating. Burial will follow in the Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday night from 5 to 7 at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Memorials may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P O Box 122, Woolwine, VA 24185 or to the Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church c/o Linda Midkiff, 393 Apple Tree Dr., Stuart, VA 24171.
