Mr. James Carlis Kirkman

Mr. James Carlis (Jimmy) Kirkman, 77, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson due to complications from a fall. He was born June 3, 1938 in Mount Airy to the late Thomas R. and Josephine Jones Kirkman. He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School, class of 1956. He was declared “Spiritual Advisor and Social Director” of the class by his beloved 1956 “Chum Day” gang. A graduate of Guilford College and Piedmont Bible College, Jimmy taught in the area public schools and served as Pastor of Presbyterian churches in Patrick County, Va. He was the owner of Kirkman Car Wash, Oak Grove Self- Storage and Mount Pilot Self-Storage. He was such a kind and gentle spirit, who had a great smile and laugh, a flare for business, a love of sports, McDonald’s coffee, and the stock market. He never missed a Mt. Airy vs. North Surry football game and always had a VIP seat right on the field. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Ashburn Kirkman and four children, daughter, Jamie Kirkman Kelly and husband Peter, three sons, Vincent Kirkman and friend Kim Sawyers, Nolan Kirkman and wife Christi, and Keenan and Steve Kirkman-Howle; grandchildren, Salem Kirkman and Eric Kelly; step grandchildren, John Kelly and wife Karyn and Sarah Kelly Posada and husband Raul. Other survivors include brothers, Charles Kirkman of Mount Airy and Robert Kirkman and wife Brenda of Oak Ridge. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM, Friday, October 9, 2015 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jon Cawley officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Tina Mooney, 2148 Westfield Rd., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
