Mr. Joe Vance Thompson, 79, of Elkin, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Surry County on Oct. 2, 1934, to the late Zebulon and Claudine Hanks Thompson. Mr. Thompson was retired from BB&T where he worked as a city executive for many years. After his retirement, he became the owner and operator of Thompsons Appraisal Services, Inc. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Salem Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Hamlin Thompson; two children, Jill and husband Patrick Young of Marion and Dexter and wife Cindy Thompson of Lowgap; three beloved grandchildren, Joseph Ross Thompson, Elizabeth Jeane Thompson and Daniel Vance Young; and a brother, Wayne and wife Charlene Thompson of Elkin. In addition to his parents, a sister, Nancy Thompson Swaim, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Salem Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Lewis Jr. with the eulogy given by Gary York. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Special thanks to family, friends, neighbors and the staffs of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital; and Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, it is the family's wish that monetary donations or food items be graciously donated to the Foothills Food Pantry, PO Box 1065, Dobson, NC 27017; or the charity of the donor's choice. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the family.
