Mr. Larry Mitchell Martin, 67, of Mt. Airy passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born in Surry County on May 24, 1948 to the late Fletcher Alvis Martin and Pauline Easter Martin Murry. Mr. Martin was a retired tool and die maker and was a member of Mt. Airy Friends Meeting. He was a member of the Special Operations Association. He proudly served our country in the United States Army Special Forces MACV-SOG as a Green Beret during the Vietnam War Receiving a Purple Heart. Mr. Martin was an Eagle Scout and a member of Troop 538 of the Old Hickory Council, and a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Mt. Airy Elks Lodge, and a former member of Cross Creek Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kathryn “Kitty” Pendleton Martin; daughters and sons-in-law, Allyson Martin and Larry Smith, Emily Estes and Dr. Kevin Shute, Susie Estes and Brandon Cooke; grandchildren, Steele Smith, Jessica Cooke, Drew Cooke, Conor Cooke, Addison Shute, and Everett Shute; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Jack Timmons, Donna and David Tolbert, Gaynell and Jack Pratt, Betty and Roger White; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joey and Jamie Martin, F.A. and Joann Martin, Gary and Sandy Martin, Danny and Michelle Martin, Steve Murray; many nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rebecca and Bill Pendleton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ben and Tammy Pendleton, Rev. Bill Pendleton and Toby. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Wayne Martin. A memorial service with full military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Airy Friends Meeting with Dr. Jon Cawley officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
