Mr. Leslie Eugene Carter, 89, of Mt. Airy passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born in Surry County on August 12, 1924 to the late James Walter and Sarah Evelyn Spencer Carter. Mr. Carter was retired from Mt. Airy Furniture and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Carter fought in the European Theater, and received two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star. He was a very humble man with a great love of family and friends; who also possessed an incredible artistic gift. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Virginia B. Carter; nieces, nephews and their spouses, Glenda and Howard Hunter, Bill and Ann Stewart, Cookie and Eddie Johnson, Sharon Donahue, Kent and Becky Stewart, Randall Carter, Betty B. Edwards. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Wagoner Carter; four sisters, Mae C. Byrd, Grace C. Stewart, Sallie C. Pruett, and Tallie S. Chandler; two brothers, James A. "Red" Carter and Arthur F. Carter; two nephews, Larry and Gary Stewart. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 AM until time of the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.
