Mr. Marshall Donald "Don" Phillips

Mr. Marshall Donald (Don) Phillips went home to be with his heavenly father on May 10, 2015 after a brief illness. Don was born to Marshall and Myrtle Phillips on June 10, 1937 in Rockford, NC. After completing high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country, enjoying travel to Japan and throughout the Pacific as part of his time in the military. Don wed the love of his life, Anndrea Chaney, on June 27, 1970. They made their home in Dobson, NC after spending the first few years of their marriage in Forest City, Asheboro, and High Point. Don recognized his dream of owning his own business when he opened Fairview Discount Grocery with his brother-in-law and close friend, Larry Chaney, in 1974. They served the Fairview community with this service station, mini-grocery and automobile repair shop for 20 years before opening a new location, Crossroads Convenience, nearby in 1993. Don officially retired in 1999 but continued to dabble in automobile repair for friends for many years. Don was an avid golfer and loved playing more frequently after he retired. He was blessed to continue playing golf up until the start of his final illness at the beginning of March. Don was a devoted father to his children, Derek and Marsha. He especially relished his role as papa to his grandson, Mason Ebert, spoiling him beyond measure and finding everything he said and did to be hilarious and special. Don is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Anndrea "Andy", of the home; children Derek of Dobson and Marsha (Chuck) Ebert of Durham; grandson Mason Ebert of Durham; brother, Lin Phillips of Pilot Mountain, and countless close friends and neighbors. His funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Davis and the Rev. James Pardue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at Moody-Davis Funeral Home where his body will remain until time to be carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Special thanks to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and the many family members, friends and neighbors for their loving and compassionate care during this difficult time.
