Mr. Robert James Cummings, 89, of Elkin passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born March 21, 1923 in Yadkin County to Thomas Buster and Martha Everidge Cummings. He was a retired truck driver having worked for Johnson Brothers Trucking Company and Sunbeam Corporation. He later formed his own trucking business then drove for his son's company, Southland Transportation, retiring at the age of 83. Mr. Cummings was one of the original organizers of the CC Camp Volunteer Fire Department, where he worked to clear the land for the fire station. He was a member of Little Richmond Baptist Church. He enlisted in the Army on January 15, 1943 and was a Sergeant in the 773rd Amphibious Tractor Battalion during WWII. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Mounce Cummings of the home; a son, Robert James "R.J." Cummings, Jr. and his wife Jo Anne of Elkin; two daughters, Karen Sue Armstrong-Cummings and husband Dan of Frankfort, KY, and Barbara Reed of Mebane; his loving grandchildren, Rebecca Cummings and Russell Hindle of Raleigh, Jennifer Cave and husband Luke of Elkin, Robert Cummings and wife Kimberly of Durham, Patrick Spence and wife Erin of Mars Hill, Molly Martin and husband Michael of Ashburn, VA, Daniel Armstrong and fiancé Zoe Plakias of Davis, CA; great-grandchildren, Joshua Cave, Jacob Cave, Jenna Cave, Samuel Cummings, Naomi Martin and Nolan Spence; a brother-in-law, Paul Corder of Wilmington, a special friend, Bobby Mendenhall, of Boonville, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cummings was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Spence Cook; a son-in-law, Joe Reed; and two sisters, Eloise Corder and Betty Jo York.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Little Richmond Baptist Church by Rev. J.V. Lowe with burial to follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6 to 8 pm at Moody-Davis Funeral Home where his body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
