Mr. Sam Harrison Newsome, "Papa Sam" age 77 of Mt. Airy, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at his home. Mr. Newsome was born in Yadkin County on November 3, 1934 to Jonah and Ruby Hemric Newsome. He was most recently employed with Cooke Trucking after sixty years of trucking. "Papa Sam" dearly loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are his devoted wife, Joye Bobbitt Newsome of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Herman Vaughn; sons, Ken Newsome and fiancée Melissa Lawson and Kevin Newsome and fiancée Leslie Marshall all of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Chris Mauldin and wife Misti, Kendra Durham and husband Jeremy, Kimberly Gates and husband Chad, Keisha Johnston and husband Brian, Keevie Newsome, Klay Newsome, Katey Newsome, Jordan Newsome, Seth Newsome, Shelly Taylor, Amanda Adams and husband Matt, Cameron Marshall and Aaron Marshall; great grandchildren, Cole Mauldin, Carson Mauldin, Mason Taylor, Maggie Taylor, Meg Adams, Jonah Adams, Tre Gates and Gracie Rae Gates; and sisters-in-law, Gay Jones and Ann Willard. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newsome was preceded in death by a brother, Venice Newsome. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 6, 2012 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ricky Thomas. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Rosa and Flannery with Mountain Valley Hospice for their very special care given to Mr. Newsome. The family adamantly requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
