Mr. Samuel Augustus Nichols

Mr. Samuel Augustus Nichols, 76, of Mt. Airy and formerly of Sophia, WV, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Raleigh County, WV to the late Ulysses George and Edna Jane Ragle Nichols. Mr. Nichols was a Sophia High School graduate, attended Beckley Jr. College and served aboard the USS Plymouth Rock prior to being discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1963. He was a Master Mason at the Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 156, Coal City, WV. Mr. Nichols was a retired USDA Federal Meat Inspector and was last employed in the maintenance department at Surry Community College. He enjoyed hunting, sports, bluegrass music, gardening, cooking and sharing. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Richardson White and Shirley Shumate and Charlotte Nichols, brothers, John, Estil and baby Nichols. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Joyce Farley Nichols; a brother, Ernest D. Nichols and several nieces and nephews, whom he adored. To honor Mr. Nichols request, there will not be formal services held at the funeral home but a memorial service will be held at a later date.
