Mr. Steve Garland Slate

Mr. Steve Garland Slate, age 76 of Stuart, Virginia passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Pioneer Community Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Patrick County on January 24, 1935 to the late Sam Slate and Sallie Hill Slate. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Barbour Slate, a beloved mother-in-law; Granny Barbour, five brothers, Leonard, Clifford, Marion, Will and Bennie Slate. Mr. Slate owned and operated Steve Slate Tile Company and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. With his inquiring mind he was a man of many talents and interests, such as hunting, fishing, inventing things out of necessity, sharing items from his beautiful garden, making Mrs. Barbour's Relish to share, history, reading, knowledge of current events, genealogy, and his love for entertaining people.
Mr. Slate is survived by a son, Steve Mitchell "Mitch" Slate of Stuart; two brothers, Sonny Slate of Claudville and Claude Slate of Stuart; six sisters, Dean Roberson-Thrasher of Stuart, Jane S. Harris of Standardsville, Nancy S. Mires of New Hampshire, Barbara S. Turner of Stuart, Julie S. Via of Martinsville, Rebecca S. Cohn of Birmingham and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Slate will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 10:00 am at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Rev. Jim Churchwell and Dr. Bucky Hunsicker officiating. Interment will follow in the Slate Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
