Mr. Thomas Gladstone Gordon, 85, of Dobson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born in Surry County on August 25, 1928 to the late Thomas Preston and Minnie Chappel Gordon and a faithful member of Dobson First Baptist Church. He entered the United States Air Corps in September of 1947 and served in the new Air Force as an Air Traffic Control Operator while in various Pacific Islands during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in May of 1951 as a Staff Sergeant. He later became a North Carolina Department of Transportation Drivers License Examiner and retired in 1991 after thirty eight years of service. He worked primarily in Mount Airy, Dobson, Elkin and Yadkinville and was well known in these areas. Being a lover of nature, when he was able, he loved to work in the garden and enjoyed feeding the birds and watching squirrels. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of fifty years, Reba Lois Hill Gordon, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Brian and Patricia Ashley Gordon, of Wilkesboro; James Wallace "Wally" and Susan Beane Gordon, of Winston-Salem, Thomas Gladstone, Jr. and Kattura Gordon of South Port, NC; four beloved grandchildren, Olivia "Nichole" Gordon and partner Rachel Momberg, Thomas Edward "Ted" and Emily Gordon, James Clark Gordon and partner Kate Vonallmen, and Alexander "Alex" Gordon; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Gordon, Sean Edward Gordon, Elliyanna "Ellie" Danielle Gordon and Zayden Carl Gordon; a sister, Patricia Gordon Beamer and husband Arthur of Greensboro; two sisters-in-law, Alene Gordon and Shirley Gordon; an aunt, Foye Wagoner; many loving nieces and nephews; and a special friend of the family, Thomas Jonathan Snow. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by two brothers, Buster Gordon and Fred Gordon; a sister and brother-in-law Nancy Gordon Hatcher and Clark Hatcher. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Dobson First Baptist Church by the Rev. Cory Honeycutt and the Rev. Roger Hensley with burial to follow in the Dobson City cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11am until time for the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home 945 Zephyr Road Dobson, NC 27017 or to Dobson First Baptist Church 204 South Crutchfield Street Dobson, NC 27017.
