Mr. William Franklin "Frank" Overby

William Franklin "Frank" Overby, age 84 of the Collinstown Community in Westfield, North Carolina passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem following a lengthy illness.
Frank loved, encouraged, and was an inspiration to his girls, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, and all who knew him.
Frank spent his entire life on the family farm growing crops, gardens, and he especially enjoyed growing watermelons for his family and friends. He used his mechanical abilities working as a diesel mechanic for Hennis Freight Lines and Pilot Freight Carriers for many years. Upon retirement from the trucking industry, he worked for five years for the North Carolina Department of Transportation in Stokes County. After retirement, Frank and his brother in Christ, Johnnie Gray, visited the sick and shut-in families in the community. They eagerly visited, prayed with, and read scripture to those unable to attend church. Frank loved his church, Collinstown Presbyterian and served the church in many capacities over the years including Elder, Grounds Keeper, Teller, and Youth Sunday School Teacher. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and continued in the Army Reserves for eight years.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents at the age of 17, and quickly and honorably accepted the role of being the man of the family farm for his two older sisters. He was born to Virgil Harber Overby and Annie Puckett Overby on February 7, 1930. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, infant Maggie Marie, Bessie Goins and Mary Mitchell. Frank was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Leon Jones and great granddaughter, Alli Lane Turner.
Frank is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Mitchell Overby of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann Jones of Westfield, NC and Bonnie Pendleton and Junior of Stuart, VA; three grandchildren Lesli A. Turner and Ronald Chaney of Woolwine, VA, Mandy P. Dixon and Thomas of Patrick Springs, VA and Jason Pendleton of Stuart, VA; two great-grandchildren Jayse and Sydni Turner of Woolwine, VA; and his "great" dog, Oscar.
