Mrs. Annie Lee Barker Hardy, 82, a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, of Dobson died Tuesday morning May 15, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hardy was born in the Crutchfield community, Surry County, NC, January 23, 1930 to the late James Edgar (Ed) and Emma Dinkins Barker. She was descended from some of the oldest families in Surry and Yadkin Counties. Mrs. Hardy was also the granddaughter of the late James R.(Jim) and Elizabeth Money Barker and Henry T. (Tip) and Mary Elizabeth Castevens Dinkins. She was raised on the tobacco farm of her paternal grandparents where she learned the lessons of hard work, love of animals, and integrity. Mrs. Hardy was an active, lifelong member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church for over six decades where she was a member for many years of the Adult Sunday School Class, and involved in various other church activities. She was an accomplished homemaker and a loving childcare provider. Mrs. Hardy enjoyed cultivating flower and vegetable gardens, and canning the bounty of the latter. She was a superb cook and an accomplished seamstress who sewed many of the children's clothes. Mrs. Hardy had a love for UNC-Chapel Hill basketball, Atlanta Braves baseball, NASCAR racing, and was an amateur caretaker and observer of birds on her property. She was a great reader who loved knowledge. Surviving are her loving husband of sixty- four years, Roger Hardy, to whom she married February 27, 1948; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice Hardy Davis and husband, Donald (Petie), of Dobson, Kathy Hardy and Ralph Holt of Rural Hall, and Bonita Hardy Wishon Durham and husband, Charles, of Elkin; one grandson, Donald Gray Davis, Jr. of Dobson; one half-sister Judy Barker Walker, of Boonville; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Audrey Tate Barker of Chesterfield, Virginia; nieces and nephews; and a host of many friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hardy was preceded in death by one son-in-law, John Elbert (J.E.))Wishon; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Barker Hughes and husband, Forrest; one brother, James Harold Barker; one niece, who died in early childhood, Cheryl Susan (Susie) Key; one half brother, James Denny Barker; and step-mother, Verlie Whitaker Barker. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with services conducted by the Rev. James Pardue , church pastor, and Donald G. Davis, Sr., eulogist, with interment to follow in the Mount Hermon Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Moody- Davis Funeral Home of Dobson.
