Mrs. Betty Jean Lawson, 81, of Mt. Airy passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. She was the widow of James Webb Lawson. She was born in Lowndes County, GA. on May 29, 1932 to the late Julian Braxtal and Mary Kathleen McMillian Lawson. Mrs. Lawson was a member of New Life Baptist Church. After retirement, Betty and James moved from Greensboro to Mt. Airy where they enjoyed Old Time Music. You could find them with many friends on Friday and Saturday nights in Surry County and the surrounding area, dancing and listening to music, and James calling the square dance. She was a Volunteer Craft leader for Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for over sixteen years. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Bruce Henning of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; a son and daughter-in-law, Webb and Della Lawson of Bermuda Run; four grandchildren, Haley Lawson of Bermuda Run, Jamie Lawson of Winston Salem, Mary Henning of Moorehead, Minnesota and Caroline Henning of Lincoln, NE; great grandchild, Mason Andrew James Cina; sisters and brothers-in-law, Myra and Raymond Phelps of Jacksonville, FL, Harriett and Frank Hogdson of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Polly and Pendleton Little of Valdosta, GA; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Lawson was preceded in death by a brother, Julian Braxtal Lawson, Jr. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gray Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow in the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
