Mrs. Ethel Gretchen Taylor

Mrs. Ethel Gretchen Taylor, 101 of Mt. Airy passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. She was born in Surry County June 28, 1912 to the late Benjamin Arthur and Olga Miller Booker. A centenarian; retired Surry County School Teacher, a loving mother, grandmother and friend, Mrs. Taylor was a great inspiration to many people, continuing to share stories of her past and history as she lived it. Some of her stories were shared in two locally written books, "Outhouse Spiders and Tin Tub Baths" and "Hometown Memories Foothills-Piedmont". Her mother's boxed wedding dress demonstrated the sentimental love and respect of her mother; she had also preserved the handbag from her first day teaching along with a few other items of clothing that held special memories. Some of her favorite music consisted of songs from Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline. Left to cherish her memories are a daughter, Ava Gretchen Taylor of Mt. Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin Chadwick "Chad" and Deborah "Debbie" Martin Taylor of Mt. Airy; a grandson, Christopher Scott Taylor and fiancée, Leslie Linville Haynes; two great grandchildren, Britney Denise Taylor Miller and husband, Shane and Christina Faith Taylor; numerous cousins and a special niece, Bobbie Stallings Lowe Triozzi and nephew, Rodney Lowe; many special friends, three distinct, Donna Garber, the daughter of her best friend from college and Rev. Don and Pat Bell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dennis "Bud" Cameron and Rev. Dorothy Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Zion United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
