Mrs. Gertrude Iris Jones Long

Mrs. Gertrude Iris Jones Long, age 93, of Mt. Airy, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Long was born in Surry County on November 13, 1920 to William Paul Jones and Emma Haynes Jones Snow. She graduated from Beulah High School and Mt. Airy Beauty School. She was a hairdresser prior to becoming a housewife and stay at home Mom, working at several salons in Mt. Airy. Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Long of Hickory; sons, Johnny Paul Long and wife Kelly of Chapel Hill and Terry Long of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Jennifer Shelton and husband Billy, Lalena Long, Dustin Long, Jimmy Mack Long, and Jacob Long and wife Whitney; six great grandchildren; a brother, Dr. C. Jack Snow of Mt. Airy; sisters, Peggy Snow Tilley and husband Mike of Pilot Mountain; Polly Snow James of Shallotte; sisters-in-law, June Trivette and husband Charles of Hickory; Madeleine Long of Charlotte; Rachel Long of Dobson and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, McAdoo Elvin Long; her stepfather, Richard Austin Snow; a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Ella Jones; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Long; stepbrothers, Rayburn Snow, Brady Snow and Edgar Snow, step sisters, Nonnie Snow York, Odessa Snow Stockton and Vera Patterson and a sister-in-law, June Snow. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Oak Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Alton Bledsoe and Rev. David Long. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church or Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund at 272 Oak Grove Church Rd. Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
