Mrs. Gladys Bateman Vaughn, age 94 of Danville, and formerly of Claudville, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on November 10, 1919 to the late Robert "Bob" and Alice Joyce Bateman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Joseph Vaughn; three step sons, Gilmer C. Vaughn, Billy F. Vaughn and Raymond J. "Ray" Vaughn; one step great-grandson, Billy Kyle Vaughn; one sister, Bessie Hill; and three brothers, Claude, Clay and Harvey Bateman. She retired from United Elastic in Stuart and was a member of Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church in Claudville. She was a gifted and skilled quilter and made many beautiful quilts for her family and the Children's Home in Wytheville. Her craft was appreciated and will be treasured by all recipients.
Mrs. Vaughn is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janice V. and Danny Rakes of Danville; one step daughter, Irene V. Byrd of Martinsville; three step daughters-in-law, Nancy Stewart of Marshville, North Carolina, Ruth Vaughn of Stuart and Donice Vaughn of Roanoke; six step grandchildren; ten step great-grandchildren; and eight step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Vaughn will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Bill Rountree officiating. Burial will follow in the Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
