Hazel Cabaniss Fallis of Mt. Airy, NC, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, four days shy of her 90th birthday. Hazel was born to the late Robert W. and Myra M. Cabaniss on May 25, 1924. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Marvin Cabaniss, Bannie Cabaniss, Narvalee Cabiniss, Ray Cabaniss, Catherine C. White, Roberta C. McLain, Leona C. Hartner, Robert William Cabaniss, Jr., George Cabaniss, Bobby Cabaniss, Hiriam Cabaniss, and Williard Cabaniss. Hazel is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Jon (Jack) Fallis, her daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Mark Zehnbauer of Glen Gardner, NJ, and Cynthia and Reinhard Beatty of Blacksburg, VA. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jonathan Zehnbauer, Timothy Zehnbauer, Adam Zehnbauer, Megan Beatty, Emily Beatty, and Julia Beatty. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews who each held a very special place in her heart. Hazel completed her nursing training at Mobile City Hospital and Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. She had a long and varied career as a registered nurse, administering care to many. She was an active member of the Salem United Methodist Church and for many years a volunteer nurse with Hospice of Surry County. She spent her life devoted to serving others and enjoying many hobbies, including gardening, square dancing, cooking, and entertaining. She and her husband were the first to operate a bed and breakfast in Mt. Airy. Funeral services will be held at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Bay Minette, Alabama on May 31, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials to Mountain Valley Hospice or Salem United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy, NC.
