Mrs. Lillian Annette Williams Carter

Mrs. Lillian Annette Williams Carter, age 80 of Stuart, passed away Friday, February 13, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was born in Patrick County on January 10, 1935 to the late Dudley Stanley Williams and Bertha Murphy Williams. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Clevis "A.C." Carter; a granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Goad; and two brothers, Jack Williams and Earl Tosso Williams. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Carter graduated from Stuart High School in 1953 as salutatorian of her class. She was a helpmate to her husband running their hauling business, working on the farm, and raising gardens. She was a homemaker who not only cared for her own five children but who also provided care for many others. She cared for as many as thirteen children at times. Many children and adults refer to her as "Mama Carter". One nephew endearingly called her "Phee Mommy".
Mrs. Carter's daughter (Annette), son (Roger Lee), and niece (Ivy Lillian "Ivy Lee") were named after her. Mrs. Carter enjoyed listening to old-timey and bluegrass music, especially her husband's guitar playing, and attending music festivals. She also loved pitching horseshoes. She played catcher for a softball team on which three of her daughters played. The rest of the family was always in attendance watching the games. One of the most enjoyable things in Mrs. Carter's life was watching her children and grandchildren participate in sporting events.
Mrs. Carter is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Karl Weiss of Stuart, Sandra and Brett Hill of Charlotte, North Carolina, Glenda and Mike Vaughn of Clemmons, North Carolina, Annette and Ronnie Turner of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Paula Carter of Meadows of Dan; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Opal Hughes, Sadie Martin, Iris Payne, Nancy Hubbard, Barbara Morrison, Helen Roberson and husband, Johnnie, all of Stuart; two brothers, Nash Williams and wife, Donna of Sparta, North Carolina and Clyde Williams of Stuart; one sister-in-law, Opal Williams of Stuart and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Ronnie Greene officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens with grandsons, Jason Weiss, Matthew Hill, Chip Vaughn, Drew Goad, Levi Carter and Wesley Carter serving as pallbearers.
