Mrs. Maggie Callahan Slate

Mrs. Maggie Elizabeth Callahan Slate, age 93 of Mt. Airy, moved to the immediate presence of God on Monday, June 20, 2011. Mrs. Slate was born in Surry County, August 20, 1917 to Thomas Jefferson and Stella Lee Williams Callahan. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be dearly missed by all her devoted family. Mrs. Slate and her late husband, Ernest Slate, were adored by the entire community for their loving care and compassion toward others. Surviving is a son and three daughters-in-law, Joe Bill and Kathy Slate of Mt. Airy; Jo Slate of Ararat, VA; Opal Slate of Mt. Airy; a son-in-law, Jack Sawyers of Mt. Airy; eight grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sisters, Grace White of Elkin; Gertrude Wall of King; Marie Butner of Tobaccoville and a special friend and care giver, Marie Pell. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by daughters, Naomi Slate and Rachel Sawyers; sons, Jimmy Slate, Larry Slate and Garry Slate; sisters, Bertha White, Thelma Cooke, Ola Brindle and Opal Ward and brothers, Raymond Callahan, Junior Callahan and Dee Callahan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Moody Funeral Home by Rev. Darren Slate and Rev. Tim Burton. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home.
