Mrs. Virginia Marguerite Morris Brown, 98, of Mount Airy, N.C., formerly of Pulaski, Va., died on May 15, 2013 in the Skilled Care Unit of the Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mt. Airy. Marguerite was born in Mt. Airy in 1915 and married James Monroe "Jim" Brown, also of Mt. Airy, in 1939. More than 40 years of their 66-year marriage was spent in Pulaski, Va., where Marguerite was active in the First Baptist Church and, in later years, assisted Jim in his wholesale grocery business, Blue Ridge Supply Co. Following retirement, they moved to Cana, Va., and then to Mt. Airy. In addition to her dedication to her Lord, she was known for her extraordinary cooking skills and for her handwork, especially crocheting and counted cross-stitch. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Clara B. and William E. Cox of Blacksburg, Va.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, J. Morris and Phyllis Brown of Payson, Ariz., Dennis E. and Kay Brown of Carrollton, Va., and Joseph H. "Joe" Brown of Christiansburg, Va.; Joe's fiancée, Renee Blevins of Dublin, Va.; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Wendy and Keith Royston of Smithfield, Va.; four grandsons and three granddaughters-in-law, Kevin and Toni Brown of Rock Hill, S.C., Eric and Lori Brown of Cary, N.C., Wesley and Sandra Brown of Asheville, N.C., and Jamie Brown of Gastonia, N.C.; Jamie's fiancée, Michelle Stephens of Gastonia, N.C.; a step-granddaughter and step-grandson-in-law, Wendy and Mark Donnelly of Weare, N.H.; seven great-grandchildren, Olivia Brown of Rock Hill, S.C., Emerson and Harper Brown of Cary, N.C., Reagan and Bryce Royston of Smithfield, Va., Sofia Brown of Asheville, N.C., and Andrew Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; two step-great-grandsons, Cullen Donnelly and Konner Beaudoin of Weare, N.H.; a soon-to-be step-great-granddaughter, Olivia Coblentz of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Dorothy Boyles and Myrtle Morris of Mt. Airy, N.C.; sister-in-law, Maude Morris of Mt. Airy; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Victor and Jessie Webb Morris; two sisters, Katherine Brown and Ruth Blackburn; and brother, Howard Morris. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy preceding a celebration of Marguerite's life at 11:00 AM Monday, May 20, 2013 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Old Fancy Gap Road, Mt. Airy, with Dr. James Joseph and Rev. Doug DeLong officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 123 Mount Carmel Church Road, Mount Airy, N.C. 27030, or to a charity of one's choice. The family expresses grateful appreciation to the staffs of the Skilled Care Unit of the Northern Hospital of Surry County and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, both in Mt. Airy, N.C., for their gentle and loving care of Marguerite and to Phill and Phyllis Whittaker and Dr. James Joseph for their friendship and frequent visits to Marguerite, especially during the latter years of her life.
